A Wedding in Mcely

Finally, the event that was the genesis of our summer Europe adventures: Oliver and Veronika’s wedding in the rural village of Mcely in eastern Czechia. We stayed at the wedding venue – Chateau Mcely – for two days of wedding events, it was a stunning venue with a fabulous spring-fed pool and park-like grounds for everyone to explore. The kids loved scooting around the property on bikes and our hotel room was beyond luxurious, somewhere we could all imagine a Disney princess spending the night!

The first night was the rehearsal dinner at nearby Loucen Castle. Unlike Chateau Mcely – which I believe was built in recent times with the intent of being a hospitality destination – Loucen Castle dates back to 1223 and was originally a medieval fortress. The original fortress suffered significant damage during the brutal Thirty Years’ War in the seventeenth century with the current baroque castle built between 1703 and 1714. I left my camera back at the chateau during the rehearsal so no pics, but it was quite the evening: we were greeted by a crew of performers in medieval garb who acted out various parts of the castle history, culminating with a fencing competition in which Lilia and Max very much enjoyed being the finalists. Lilia was the victor, pumped to defeat her chivalrous brother as he competed balancing on one leg. Very fun. The food at the rehearsal dinner was absolutely phenomenal, some of the most scrumptious dishes I’ve ever had the pleasure of consuming. Vojta and his team created such an incredible array of dishes, very memorable.

The wedding day was long but such a beautiful event, the flower arrangements littered across the chateau were very impressive. So fun to see everyone all dressed up, Wild Man fit the bill in his little suit and Lilia looked way too mature in her fancy dinner dress. Lots of good conversation, beautiful bridesmaids, a stunning bride and plenty of happy tears during the day as Oliver and Veronika tied the knot. It was all memorable, but Veronika’s midnight transformation will forever be a highlight: she got rid of her grand wedding dress only to emerge in the shortest-of-short feather dresses, a white cowboy hat and rhinestone cowboy boots. She was there to party! Congratulations Veronika and Oliver!

And a few post-wedding pics from the professional photographer that I wanted too put up…
