Kirby Cove Camping

After all the places we’ve visited around the world, the campsite under the Golden Gate Bridge at Kirby Cove remains one of my favorite spots to spend a weekend with the family and friends. We managed to score a site for the kids’ first weekend back at school and had the Taylors and McGees join us for two nights on the edge of the headlands. Such a special spot being able to watch the cargo ships eke under the bridge with the city and Seacliff in the distance. Lots of good beer and smooth wine by the fire on both evenings, as well as some intense games of beach baseball with the kids. We even had the Tooth Fairy visit us at camp after Colette twisted out a wiggly front tooth on the second evening at camp. And with minimal fog this year, it was a treat to be able to sleep without the drone of the fog horn (something we’d prepared for with earplugs after the incessant fog horn last time we camped in the cove!).

One of the things I enjoy most about Kirby Cove is the fact that one can ride bikes across the bridge and into the city from the campground. We tackled the ride with the kids one morning, it was a chilly trek across the Golden Gate but a great way to get the legs moving after a few too many glasses of vino the night before. And the boys had a ball checking on the halibut and crab fishermen at Fort Point. We also spent an afternoon in the sun people watching at Mission Dolores Park – surely one of the best places to people watch on the planet (!) – followed by an exceptional dinner at Mission Chinese Food. I was very proud of Benji trying all the dishes with Max, definitely some new smells and tastes for the little guy.

Such a fun weekend and I’m stoked the Taylors and McGees pulled it all together to join us for a couple of nights. Back to school tomorrow, flew by way too fast but we all can’t wait for a repeat next summer!
