The Fair Begins

Fair week is here with a bang: Max’s first year showing sheep and Lilia going for another round of horse showmanship and market rabbits. As with most things involving Shirley and Snugglepuff, the sheep washing was quite the event: lots of frustration from Max and a few laughs here and there form the parents and grandparents. Washing a 130 pound/50 kilogram sheep is no easy task: it took a 10 year old and three adults the better part of two hours to get them washed and dried! They do look amazing now they’re all cleaned up, though…

Lilia spent days before the horse showmanship event getting Hank all washed and tidy. I think the ol’ boy enjoyed all the pampering, to be honest… A year’s worth of preparation came down to a quick 90 seconds in front of the judge, and anything out of place cost dearly. Lilia unfortunately had one of her hands graze the underside of the horse’s neck for a quick second in the junior HFFCF event, something the judge noticed and resulted in her slipping from first place to fifth. Such a bummer! But in the broader 4H competition she held it together well, placing third out of a pretty competitive field and missing second by the slimmest of margins. The young gent who took first was an exceptionally well practiced showman, taking first in every even in which he entered. Fun day, great to have Granny Jenni here to join in on the action!
