Royals at the Giants

No better way to bring in the start of the warm weather than with a day in the city for the Giants’ opening series against the Kansas City Royals. It was an exceptional day of weather for us down there, I should have worn shorts! Granny Jenni had never been to a major league ball game, so a new experience for her as well as for Max. It was a slow game for the first half, but things heated up towards the end with a three run inning from the Giants in the eighth to seal the win. The noise when Conforto smashed a go-ahead two-run shot was absolutely deafening, the crowd ecstatic to take home the Giants’ first home win of the season. Other than the beers getting more expensive every time we go to an MLB game (the can pictured below was $17 before tax!), it was a really fun day and a great way to spend the Easter long weekend.

We explored Chinatown after the game, spending an hour-or-so in the bazaars and knickknack stores lining Grant Street. Max was on the hunt for firecrackers and found what he was looking for at a kite store towards Dragon Gate, 20 absolutely deafening bang snaps for the bargain price of $3.69 . The lady who sold them to him told him in no uncertain terms that he could blast them off in the street outside the front of the store: “Oh yes, firecracker no problem in Chinatown,” she said. I will never forget the 10-or-so passers by all jumping in the air in unison when he threw one down in the middle of Grant Street! He also received a decidedly chilly comment from a lady walking her dog nearby (but she was certainly not Chinese, and the old Chinese fellow on the sidewalk next to her was having a good giggle!). Of special note also was a recommendation we received for a hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant on Clay called Capital, where we met Francis and Suzanne for dinner. Excellent food, will definitely be back.
