Abalone Season Opening Day

Jerry and Paul took me out to one of their secret abalone spots north of Jenner yesterday for abalone season opening day.  Even though the water was, as Paul put it, a bone-cracking 47F (8C) and visibility was at best around six feet, it was a beautiful day out on the Sonoma Coast and we all had a blast picking around for our day’s abs.  The big daddy below was sitting in a mere four feet of water, definitely a personal best for me.  Paul lugged in one almost as wide, but it had to be close to twice as big, it was almost round and weighed a ton!

  1. Yum, yum. Wish you were cooking for me!

  2. I am new to abalone fishing. 4 ft water is doable for me as I can’t dive. I don’t know the areas for abalone fishing so it is new to me, but hope you would share one of your secret spots? Those you caught look amazing.
